Allow Me to Introduce Myself

One of the most important steps to a homeschool evaluation is getting to know the person that you will be working with. Be sure that they are on the same page as you and that you feel comfortable sharing your year with them. You get to write this story and my job is to listen.

My name is Flora and I am so happy to meet you. I live in the Poconos with my husband , two children, a dog and three cats. From a young age, I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher. I pictured myself in a school with a class full of students and for the first 6 years of my post college life, that is exactly what I did. I was passionate about sparking the love of learning in children through creative lessons. I pictured myself in the classroom and just assumed that I would want to return after my first child was born. In the end, I had no desire to teach in a classroom after having my children, but I did find that I loved teaching in other ways. I loved learning alongside my own children. That is how our homeschool journey began.

My children are currently 16 and 13. Through 2022, they had both always been homeschooled. My eldest decided to attend a Performing Arts High School starting in 9th grade and that has been incredibly confirming that what we did from birth through eighth grade was just right. They had a smooth transition and are thriving in school. My 13 year old is still at home with me and we are still homeschooling.

Over the years, we have found that the very best style of homeschool for us is our own. We have pulled inspiration from many philosophies, but have adapted them to work for our family. As the children grow, we have to change with them. One of the biggest gifts of homeschooling has been time. Time to take days slowly, to dive deep into something that we are curious about and to spend much longer on projects than we ever anticipated. Time for reading, to be outside exploring, to adventure, to be with the people we love. Time to figure out who we are and to focus on what makes us happy. Time to learn in creative ways.

In addition to homeschooling, I also work as The Community Manager for Lavender’s Blue Homeschool. This job is part time from home and I spend my work hours encouraging others who homeschool. Between this and being a homeschool evaluator, I spend lots of time helping others find the beauty in homeschooling and I love it. There is no right or wrong, but you do have to find what works for you. You need to understand that what works one year (or week or month) might not be right the next. I am so grateful that my work supports homeschooling families and I truly hope that I can help you find the confidence that you deserve.
